Earth science is a broad field that studies the Earth, its atmosphere, oceans, and natural systems. Geology is a branch of Earth science that focuses specifically on rocks, minerals, fossils, Earth's structure, and the processes that shape the planet's surface.
Tectonic plates are massive sections of Earth's outer layer that slowly move over the mantle. Their movement causes earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mountain formation, and the gradual shifting of continents over millions of years.
The three major rock types are igneous rocks, formed from cooled magma or lava; sedimentary rocks, created from compacted layers of sediments; and metamorphic rocks, which form when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure deep within the Earth.

Earth science helps us understand natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and erosion while supporting responsible use of natural resources, groundwater management, environmental conservation, and disaster preparedness. It also explains the natural processes that continue to shape the planet we call home.
