Frequently asked questions

An operating system is system software that manages computer hardware and provides services to applications. It coordinates resources such as processors, memory, storage, devices, networking, and user interfaces.
Common operating-system families include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Different systems are designed for desktops, laptops, servers, mobile devices, embedded systems, and other computing environments.
The kernel is the core component of an operating system. It manages low-level functions such as processor scheduling, memory allocation, device communication, and access to hardware resources.
A GUI, or graphical user interface, uses visual elements such as windows, icons, buttons, and menus. A CLI, or command-line interface, allows users to interact with the system by typing text commands.
Operating-system updates can fix security vulnerabilities, correct bugs, improve stability, add hardware support, and introduce new features. Installing security updates is especially important because the operating system controls access to critical system resources.
