Frequently asked questions

Maritime history is the study of human activities connected with seas, oceans, ships, navigation, trade, exploration, naval warfare, and coastal societies. It examines how seafaring influenced the development of civilizations, economies, technologies, and international relationships.
Famous historical ships include the RMS Titanic, HMS Victory, HMS Beagle, Mayflower, and Santa María. These vessels became well known because of major voyages, scientific expeditions, naval battles, migration, exploration, or maritime disasters associated with them.
Before GPS, sailors used landmarks, nautical charts, the Sun, stars, compasses, and knowledge of winds and ocean currents. Instruments such as astrolabes and sextants helped determine position, while accurate marine chronometers eventually made calculating longitude much more reliable.
The Industrial Revolution accelerated the transition from wooden sailing vessels to steam-powered ships constructed increasingly from iron and steel. Powered propulsion made voyages less dependent on wind and helped shipping become faster, more predictable, and capable of supporting expanding international trade.
Ships enabled long-distance trade, migration, exploration, cultural exchange, scientific expeditions, colonization, and naval warfare. Maritime routes connected distant societies and helped create the interconnected trading networks that eventually developed into today's global economy.
