The basic relationship is Speed = Distance ÷ Time. From this, you can calculate distance using Distance = Speed × Time and time using Time = Distance ÷ Speed.
Average speed is calculated using Total Distance ÷ Total Time. You should not simply average two speeds unless the circumstances specifically make that calculation valid.
To convert kilometres per hour into metres per second, multiply the speed by 5/18. For example, 72 km/h × 5/18 = 20 m/s.
Relative speed describes how quickly the distance between two moving objects changes. When they move toward each other, their speeds are added. When they move in the same direction, the slower speed is subtracted from the faster speed.
Use the standard speed-distance-time relationship, but carefully determine the distance the train must cover. To pass a pole, the distance equals the train's length. To pass a platform, add the lengths of the train and platform. For two trains crossing, add both train lengths and use their relative speed.
